We went out west a couple of years ago, adding a few -very- short days in the Dakotas on the way there and back (with the idea that, if we liked it well enough, we'd schedule a trip back in the very near future--we're planning to go back out this year for a longer trip in the Dakotas). Then, sometimes you just have to settle for what your schedule will allow...
