Destin in Winter

by Amy @ The Q Family on June 5, 2009

Last year we went to Destin during the off season in October. Many people might think we were crazy. But it turned out to be one of the best vacation we have had.

The weather in Destin during October was unpredictable but mostly still warm. We got rained in a couple days but we were saved in the last day with Sunny Florida style day. The water was a bit cold but tolerable. We enjoyed Destin without any crowds. The drive along famouse Route 98 (Emerald Coast Parkway) was a breeze without any traffic. There were no wait in the restaurants.

We took a scenic drive along the coast from Fort Walton Beach up to Seagrove. We made a quick stop near Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club. The sky was clear, the water was blue, the beach was empty as if we owned the whole stretch. The little townsquare lined up with plam trees and candy color building. It was a picture perfect day and we got to witness the beautiful wedding by the beach. Next time, we will have to linger a bit longer and rent a bike to ride around town.

On the last day, we enjoyed beautiful sunset. Not too far off the coast we saw several dolphins swam up to say goodbye to us. What a perfect vacation!! We can’t wait to go back.

I've heard lots of good things about Destin and have a friend who loves to go there in the fall with her (count them) five kids. The photos are lovely.

October is the perfect time for Destin. No crowds, nice weather, and look at that gorgeous sunset. We are heading to Navarre Beach (just down the road) for our annual family beach trip and I can't wait.

Even though you had some rain, looks like you did have some great sunshine. I love traveling during the shoulder season when crowds are so low.

I love to go to places that are completely silent during the off season. It's my favorite thing to do. When I lived in Rhode Island, we used to go the beaches in the winter, talk about off season:)

I had fun on a business trip to Florida last November. It is truly beautiful that time of year.

Is that picture from Santa Rosa right off the square? It looks like the place we stayed at several years ago.

It may be the off season, but it looks lovely and warm to me! Better than the UK in winter anyway ;) We've also had a great time visiting places like Thailand and Costa Rica in the rainy season. People are scared by the thought of always being wet, but the reality is short sharp downpours (an experience in themselves) followed by sunshine to dry out all your things!

We love traveling in the "off season" much of the time. It sounds like you did, indeed, go to Destin at the right time!

Great choice in Destin for all the reasons listed in your post, cooler weather, less crowds. Any time of the year the sunsets are amazing on the gulf. We have a camping trip planed for the the first week of Oct. in the same area guaranteingloads of fun.
