Dreaming of: Angkor Wat

Dreaming of: Angkor Wat

by Amy @ The Q Family on June 1, 2009

I have lived in Thailand for over half my life but I haven’t visited my neighboring country Cambodia yet. And now I live half way around the world and I’m dreaming of visiting Angkor Wat lately. My brother and my mom were there a couple years ago. They took advantage of the low airfare and went there on a whim. The trip was probably one of many spontaneous my wanderlust brothers have done over the year. The pictures are breathtaking. I can help but envy their experience.

I plan to visit Angkor Wat on our next Thailand trip. I don’t know where to start yet but my brother can probably give me a good idea and contact to start. We will probably spend a few days there. Learning the history of this ancient city that has been reclaimed by the nature over hundred of years. Bracing the hot sun of South East Asia summer. Hopefully, it will be tolerable for my kids.

And the food.. Ah.. Food and Asian people goes together like chopsticks. We live to eat. We love to eat and we travel to eat.

Now if anyone has any great accommodation, please feel free to share.

This post is part of Monday are for Dreaming at The Mother of All Trips.

Wow – I love these pictures. You’ve definitely picked a spot that’s on my dreaming list too. Do you know of any bloggers who’ve written about going there with kids?

Hi Mara,

I’m trying to find one. I will start gathering information and let you know. Please do share if you know any. It will be in Summer 2010. So I still have sometimes to find out.

BTW, love your Monday Dreaming this week. I wish we can do extended traveling like that. Maybe one day. ;)

I'm just dreaming of visiting Angkor Wat. How long is the flight from Bangkok? Is it cheap to go here from Bangkok?

We were there in 2004 and already it had been over run with tourists. I can't imagine what it is like now. If you hire a tuk tuk to take you around you can stay one step ahead of the tour groups. We learned the hard way, to start farther out and work our way back. Going the opposite direction of what all the tours are doing. Sunrise at the main Angkor Temple was overcrowded and not needed. Stay on the road and get that famous shot across the moat; much Better. sunset on Bakhen Hill was nice too. It is beautiful. I mention it in my favorite ruins post. Cheers.

Are you thai? I’m glad your interested in Cambodia. I hope Thai and Khmer people’s relations become better. Theres a lot of hate after the border conflicts. I hope Thai people and Khmer people can get along.

I read your post on New Zealand then followed the link underneath to here! We are a kiwi family currently living in Cambodia and although our boys are now teenagers we know quite a few expat families (from here and Singapore) who have holidayed with kids of varied ages in Siem Reap. We always do the tuk tuk thing, start early and spread the temple hopping over two or three days that way when we get too hot we can retire to the hotel pool for a few hours and start again in the morning (or go again for a sunset if the mood takes us). My 70 year old parents did it earlier this year and in a few months my sister is bringing her husband and two (6 and 8) for some temple fun. Keep an eye on my blog for the details and pics!

Siem Reap was one of the best surprises of our family’s RTW trip – we spent a week there & absolutely loved it! The Angkor temples are amazing (better than Machu Picchu), the people super-friendly, and the food was great, too.

We stayed at the Kool Hotel, which was nice & quiet with good A/C and a nice pool. It was a little far from the center of the action, but we had our own tuk-tuk driver for the week, so it didn’t matter.

When you go there, don’t miss Beng Melea – it’s a 1.5 hr drive away, but there are much fewer tourists, and unlike most of the other sites, you can climb all over the ruins there. I’ll try to put more info on our blog when I have time.

And heed Dave & Deb’s advice about avoiding crowds while seeing the temples – that’s a good tip!
