With all the posts I have written about fun things to do with kids in Asheville, great place to eat with kids and family-friendly hotels to stay, you will think that I work for Asheville Tourism.

But I guess when you travel, there will always be a few destinations or places that tug at you more than any others and Asheville is the place for me.

This small town just keeps surprised me in every corner from the fun coffee bus to cool downtown.

Another Discovery in Asheville at Mast General Store

I stole a quick afternoon between sessions during Type A Mom conference to have coffee & desserts with my family. As we walked along the Biltmore Avenue to work out those calories and passed the front of The Mast General Store, we could hear the call to check out this time capsule store.

Once we opened the door and took in the scene, I felt like we had stepped back in time. The time where life was simpler and the time where this store would be the place to shop for all things from old-fashioned candies, clothing, classic toys to home decoration.

Kids-Friendly Section: Candies, Toys and Drinks

It didn’t take long for the kids to sniff out the candies section. Rows of barrels filled to the brim with different kind of old-fashioned candies created a small section in the store that kids or even adults couldn’t contain their excitement.

Next to candy lane we saw toys – classic toys like when we were kids – on display. For many young kids, this might not be a cool toy section with no PSP or Nintendo DS in sight. However, we spotted our beloved pull dog that was passing down from Mr. Rojo to them. Now 30 Years later, we saw the exact same toy in store, on the shelf and brand new in box.

As if, the toys and the candies weren’t enough to keep them happy, the cooler in the back filled with classic drinks would most definitely push it to the top. Miss J was so excited to be able to drink her A&W root beer straight from the bottle, a passage that proved that she is no longer a baby but big kid! Mr. Rojo was elated to find RC drink from his old days.

And if you are not into toys, candies or cold drinks (which I don’t know why NOT), there were home decoration and clothing section for you to browse.

I have to say I didn’t expect us to enjoy a quick visit to the Mast General Store as much as we did. It was a great quick stop to revisit our past and to see how much we as a society have changed or remained the same. In the end, kids no matter in what era still love candies and toys. There is no dispute!

There is no word to describe the excitement of Miss J and Mr. Z as their eyes glazed across the street to the double deck bus while we were waiting at the traffic light during our walk in downtown Asheville. They didn’t know what to think of it. They didn’t know they could actually go inside and order drinks or snacks.

But as soon as we stopped and headed into this little sanctuary – the Double D’s Coffee & Desserts, they were ecstatic.

The Double D’s Coffee & Desserts is a renovated retired bus from the British public transit that provide a fun family-friendly environment with a twist. This place is a great addition to a town that already fills with great places to eat or as I claim a foodie heaven town.

Miss J couldn’t wait to get inside and inspect the whole bus.

As we stepped in, we were greeted with the stairs leading us up to the upper deck. After we ordered our desserts without coffee because we didn’t have enough cash (so bring CASH), the kids were already upstairs and waited in one of the chalkboard table.

The interior is nicely decorated with fun whimsical touch. There are about 6 tables in the main area and then the front row seat where we enjoyed watching people walking by along the Biltmore Avenue.

For a family who plan to visit Asheville with kids, I would recommend spend a leisure afternoon at this quirky and fun coffee place. The menu is extensive with organic fair-trade coffee and desserts. It’s also good to know that they also provide free wifi just in case you want to work. It’s a great fun family friendly environment. But one downside, there is no bathroom on premise. So expect this to be a short visit.

Family Tips:

Bring cash or check

There is seating area outside around the bus so parent with stroller can also enjoy a cup of joe outside

There is no restroom on premise so plan accordingly

During our recent trip to Asheville – a small town that I absolutely love, we stayed at the family friendly Residence Inn Biltmore.

Why Residence Inn Biltmore

Like my previous trips, I had done some research looking for family and budget friendly accommodation for our weekend trip. I have to admit that Marriott chains have hardly crossed my mind due to the stereotype to business and high-end travel.

Don’t get me wrong. I would love to stay at one of the Five stars Marriott hotel but right now it wasn’t in our budget.

I have met a lovely lady from TBEX who mentioned that she has worked with Residence Inn and they are very family oriented.

I checked out the site and loved what I saw online.

All suite rooms with full size refrigerator and kitchen

Separate sitting area in all room

Free hot breakfast with make-your-own waffle, bacon, eggs and other healthy options

Free Wi-Fi

Pet-friendly

Indoor heated pool with saline water

Those features look pretty darn good for me so I contacted them. The Residence Inn Biltmore graciously hosted my family for a weekend.

Convenient Location

When we arrived, we were happy to find that the location of the hotel is very convenient for family to explore Asheville whether to the Biltmore Estate, downtown Asheville or Blueridge Parkway.

The property is right at the outskirt of Biltmore Village making the visit to the Biltmore Village and the Biltmore Estate very easy.

However, Asheville has more than just the Biltmore Estate, so I’m glad to find that we could easily get to downtown Asheville in less than 5 minutes drive. Make the location even more desirable.

Great Space For Family

Once we checked in, kids were quick to claim their room. We were booked at the two-bedroom suites – a great option for family of 4.

The bedroom is cleverly lay out with enough space without feeling cramp. With TV in each room, we all settled in without much conflicts.

If you are on the tight budget, one-bedroom suite might also fit your family with pull-out sofa in the living room area.

The kitchen area has all necessities that you can easily cook your own meal. This is a great option for family travel on a budget. I would like to be able to tell you how many fabulous meals we cooked but then that would be lying.

As we all know how much I love the food scenes in Asheville. The money we saved on breakfast and Wifi had been put to a good use in tasting various restaurants in Asheville.

Family Focus Amenities

After unpacking and settling in, I toured the hotel with the manager, Tony. The hotel is cozy and gives out the resort style atmosphere rather than just typical hotel. With 72 rooms of studio, one- or two-bedroom guest suites, the hotel is the right size that you won’t feel crowd out with too many guests.

We checked out the hotel pool and kids were so ready to jump in. Unfortunately, Miss J had a fever on the second day so they weren’t able to swim.

I always love the indoor pool. It allows kids to let go of their energy from a long trip regardless of unpredicted weather.

Right outside the pool, there is an outdoor play area where families can play basketball, badminton or soccer. The hotel also provides balls and other toys for families to borrow.

Tuck in between the building under the shade of growing trees are the outdoor grill and picnic tables if you want to have family meal.

Friendly and Helpful Staffs

Even though our stay was way too short for our liking, I was impressed with the customer service we received.

In the morning, the breakfast area was well stocked with helpful staff who was attentive to your need from helping my kids picking up his drink or making waffles for them.

On the check out day, I had to be at the conference and with a sick child. I didn’t want Mr. Rojo to check out too early and hang out around the lobby at the conference. The front desk was more than happy to extend our check out time to noon to provide me enough time to say good bye to my friends from Type A Mom conference.

With the plan to remodel the hotel next year to upgrade the appliances and interior design, this hotel will even be a great choice for family who looks for a great family and budget friendly hotel option in Asheville.

This past weekend, I attended the Type A Mom Conference in Asheville, NC for the 2nd year.

I have so many great memories from the conference itself and the visit to Asheville again with kids to share with all of you.

But I am still processing all the information I have learned in this short weekend. It’s by far my favorite conference. Well, I didn’t attend that many conferences so you can’t really use that as the baseline.

Here are my quick thought this Monday for Type A Mom Conference experience.

Recharge With New Ideas

The sessions were professionally executed with knowledgeable speakers. I had to admit that in the beginning, I wasn’t sure if I would gain anything new from this conference. Heck! I even thought about not attending since I already attended the first year.

Now, I’m so GLAD I decided to drive a 3 hours trip to Asheville. I have learned many new things that I can use to apply to my blog (if I’m not too lazy or too caught up in other things). For great recap of sessions, I would recommend checking out the CutestKidEver. She did live blogging during most of the sessions and speaker notes.

Renew With Directions

Another feature I loved about Type A Mom conference this year is the Tribe session.

What is a tribe session?

It’s a chance for a group of like-mind or similar niche bloggers to get together and exchange or share their knowledge with each other.

I love to be able to meet many travel bloggers that I have followed online and know new travel bloggers that I will be followed now. Jennifer Miner @ The Vacation Gals did a great job facilitated the session.

I also learned that there are many other bloggers who blog about their cities like what I did on my other blog at Atlanta With Kid. It’s good to hear and learn from them. Sarah Pinnix @ High Country Mom Squad was so opened and shared her information without reservation.

Reaffirm In Relationship

One of the best thing about Type A Mom conference is the size of the conference. As a smaller conference, I have a chance to really get to know many bloggers in the more in-depth than just a business card we exchanged.

The sessions were set in the round table format so we had a chance to talk and learn about each other before the session started. Then throughout the day, I ran into the same blogger more than once.

So today, I am dreaming of great future with this blog and many friendship that will continue to grow from this experience.

If you are thinking about attending blogging conference, check out 2010 Blog Conference List and 2011 Blog Conference List from Blog Conference Guide.

I typically don’t write hotel review on my blog. If people want to read reviews, there are plenty of review websites like TripAdvisor or Hotels to read about.

However, I also know that as a parent who loves to travel, I love to hear about personal experience from other travelers on their stay – what to do, where to eat and where to stay. These are main things when we plan our trip.

So here is our own experience at Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites – Asheville Downtown during our stay in Asheville.

Price:

I got the hotel room from Priceline.com for a very good price for less than $70 per night. It’s a great discount while the listing price on their website is over $120 per night for the same period. If you haven’t tried priceline, give it a try.

Location:

The hotel is located a couple miles from downtown area. Even though, the hotel name is Asheville Downtown. You can’t really walk to downtown.. Ok.. You might but it will be a really really long walk.

With that being said, there are plenty of other convenient factors to make this hotel a great location for family.

First of all, it’s next to Fiddlin’ Pig restaurant. And there are other restaurants and fast food places right around the corner.

Second of all, Ingle grocery chain is right across the street. For family who travels with kids, we all know how important having access to grocery store is for parents. You never know what you might forget.

Room:

The hotel room is very NICE. I was very impressed with the room decoration and cleanliness. It’s nothing fancy like a 5 stars hotel but it’s simple and decorate in the transitional style. The hotel is in a really good shape. I think they just opened only a few years ago.

There are also other amenities that make it a great option for family. A small refridgerator will help keep drinks cool. A microwave will help heat up food in the morning or a quick meal when kids go hungry. Also free high speed internet helps keep mom & dad in touch with the world. Just make sure to bring your network cable.

There are plenty of storage space for our family of 4 to put our clothes in the dresser and hang it up. Another great plus is a curve shower curtain to give more room in the shower.

Hotel Service & Facilities

I normally don’t put too much weight into a hotel pool. Most of the time, when we travel we would be out all day with hardly any time to spend in the hotel. But this trip, I’m glad the hotel has the indoor pool to give the kids something to do after a long day.

An indoor pool is nothing fancy. It’s a small heated indoor/outdoor pool. Unfortunately, it was too cold to try the outdoor part. I don’t know if it was too cold that the heated water still seemed too cold or they didn’t heat it up. But my kids didn’t have a problem jumping back and forth between a jacuzzi and the pool to warm themselves up.

We didn’t have much contact with hotel staffs throughout our stay. They were very professional and courteous whenever we talked to them.

Overall

We were very happy during our stay there. I would go back there for another stay in the future.

Disclaimer:

In light of current FTC ruling, I want to make sure that I follow whatever blogger’s rule there is.

This post is based solely on my experience and my opinion without any outside influence. I have NOT given any discount from Holiday Inn. I paid for the hotel bill from my own pocket. They probably don’t even know that I wrote about this post.

Being a frugal parent and trying to save on family travel, I always a big fan of packing lunch and cooking dinner to save on restaurants during our vacation. BUT, there is always an exception to any rule.

Our recent trip to Asheville was one of the exception. After a quick research on best places to eat, I was overwhelmed by the amount of options for this small town. I literally have to plan my meals around restaurants and yet still couldn’t fit it all in. So my next trip will have to be longer so I can try out all those recommended restaurants.

With the busy schedule of the conference we were able to fit in 3 restaurants that are worth writing about. I mean we did eat out more than 3 meals but some other meals were our typical fast food joints to save time.

Noodle Shop

Our first great meal was at the Noodle Shop on Pack Square. We found this noodle restaurant during our Asheville Photo Walk and I made up my mind there and then that we had to come back and had dinner there. And we were not disappointed.

Mr. Rojo ordered Pad Thai and I had to say it was by far the best Pad Thai I have had in a while. If you love Pad Thai from normal Thai restaurant in your neighborhood, you might feel a bit disappointed. This Pad Thai is not a dish that leads with sweet taste like American Pad Thai that you normally get. See!! there is this misconception that Pad Thai is this sweet and a bit saucy dish.. But no!! Real Pad Thai doesn’t even look red. It has a combination of salty and sweet taste. And they have nailed it.

I order the noodle soup which came out the size of the big bowl that can probably feed our whole family. We ordered pork egg noodle dish for them. And it was amazing!! Too bad, we were too full to finish it all. I wish I live there so we can order take out all the time!

Tupelo Honey Cafe

The next morning, we headed out early to one of the favorite breakfast place in Asheville – Tupelo Honey Cafe. I didn’t know that they opened at 9AM but it was a perfect timing for us. We waited a bit for them to open with a long line of customers. I mean it has to be good, right? For people to wait for them to open. Talking about no-pressure here.

Once we got inside, we got seated right away. If we were about 20 minutes later, we would have to wait probably another 30-45 minutes. It was nice to see the local farmer delivered the fresh produce right there and then. Now, that’s fresh!

The menu is extensive and I would love to go back again to try other dishes. But alas, I could only eat one dish at a time. I settled for Petunia’s Pain Perdu – a New Orleans style french toast.. Oh.. My.. Word.. It was amazing! Now, I’m not one of the foodie blogger so don’t expect me to explain in detail with words that will make your mouth watering. I could only show you the picture and hope that it will do justice.

Mr. Rojo ordered the Country Breakfast and we ordered Sweet Potato Pancakes for the kids. If I didn’t finish all my food, I would probably eat more of the pancakes as well. It was delicious and good and healthy. I love healthy food. Make me don’t feel so bad eating out so much after all.

Fiddlin’ Pig Bluegrass Barbecue

OK. I think we missed out on this restaurant because we went there too early. Since I had some schedule to keep, we had to rush for a dinner on the last night. The Fiddlin’ Pig normally has live music starting at 6pm from Monday thru Saturday. And I think they are known for that because when we got there, all the great tables were reserved. But since we knew we wouldn’t be able to stay we wouldn’t mind sitting in the corner. Next time, we just have to try out the fun Bluegrass music.

We are not barbecue buff so I wouldn’t know much about what is what. So when they brought out Mr. Rojo’s order of barbecue ribs we were a bit concern because the meat looked a tad red to his liking. It turned out they smoked the ribs so that’s how it looks. Who knew!

The food is nothing special to write home about BUT the dessert was so divine. We ordered Brownie and Ice Cream and I almost didn’t have a chance for a bite when I took Mr. Z for a quick bathroom break.

Now are you hungry yet? Because I am and I can’t wait to go back to try more restaurants. I mean I already have more to add to my list..

A couple weeks ago we went to Asheville for my first Blogger conference at Type A Mom Conference. We signed up for a sponsored blogger tour to Biltmore Estate Blogger tour on Sunday. I was so glad we did that tour. It was one of the highlighted for me.

Today, I will just post some of my favorite pictures during the tour of the house. There is no photography or video allowed inside the house. So I could only take picture of the outside and the Stable cafe. Enjoy.. I will do more detail post later. Promise!

The exterior of the Biltmore. Amazing!!

Another view of the Biltmore estate

Gorgeous mountain view from the balcony. Just imagine!

The clock at the Stable – it houses cafe and shops. Did someone say shopping?

Now, this is the reason why I didn’t get any garden shots.

And this is the reason why my kids ran wild

The view from Stable cafe

Detail.. detail.. everywhere…

As promised, you will see a few more posts about Asheville. It’s just so lovely there I can’t possibly fit everything in one post.

One of a neat feature at Type A Mom conference is the photo session. Mishelle @ SecretAgentMama was a speaker and she also organized the Photo Walk to downtown Asheville. I wasn’t a photographer by trade so I didn’t really know what to expect.

Basically, we walked around downtown Asheville and took pictures. Mishelle was so amazing and helpful. She gave me tips about how to take some interesting pictures. She is amazing.. Really.. Go check her site to see them for yourselves.

We started from parking lot by Church street. Then we walked up Patton Ave to the Plaze before turn to College street and ended our walk that Prichard Park.

Asheville is not your typical small town. It’s so vibrant and lifely. I don’t know how to articulate it in fancy word. You just have to visit and experience them for yourself to know what I mean. Sorry… not such a good travel blogger, heh?

How about some pictures? Hope it will help convey what I experienced.

Who would have thought that the Q Family Adventures will be so adventurous!

We have done camping and backyard hiking and now walking up Chimney Rock!!!

We just came back from our weekend/business trip in Asheville – which by the way IS a wonderful place to visit. There will be more Asheville posts coming.

It’s one of those spontaneous detour. We originally wanted to go canoeing but after woke up at 4:30 am to leave the house we thought we wouldn’t have the energy to do it.

Little did we know that walking up the Chimney Rock is as hard or even harder than floating on a canoe!

We arrived there early and almost missed the entrance. It is in a quaint town near Lake Lure. We parked the car and thought that we had to walk up to the park but quickly realized that we need to drive up to ticket and entrance.

The ticket information is about 1 mile from the highway so unless you are die-hard hiker just proceed with your car.

After we paid and followed the map to the base parking lot, we parked and got ready to walk up the 200+ steps up to the top of the rock.

There are several paths you can take to explore this park. So what we did was just one thing of many available options.

The path itself was very shade and not THAT hard if you take regular break to enjoy the view.

We did take a lot of break and checked out most of the view points because after all we did climb approximately more than 200+ steps up the mountain.

Now, for parents with small kids don’t worry. You can easily take an elevator up to the top and enjoy the view as well.

The view on the top is amazing. You can see Lake Lure down below and the mountain in the background. I could imagine how beautiful this will be in Fall.

Yes! We are talking about going back there again soon. Most importantly, I was so proud of Miss J and Mr. Z. They both did very well. There were no whining or asking daddy to pick them up. What a trooper!

Family Tips:

- I find it easier to walk up than going down. So take the path to go up and then take the elevator to go down.

- There aren’t many choices for food. So pack your lunch to picnic in various picnic tables around the park.

- Take it slowly. Enjoy the view while taking the break from the climb.

- If you plan to revisit within a year buy an annual pass. It will pay for itself after the 2nd visit.

We’re planning our weekend trip to Asheville, NC in September. I have heard about Asheville before because it’s home to the Biltmore Estate – one of the largest home in the US. What I didn’t know was there are so many things to do in or around Asheville with kids. Who would have thought this little gem in the Blue Ridge Mountain can be a fun destination for a whole family. Check out my list of family-friendly things you can do with your kids in Asheville.

For family with bigger kids and love the adventure, the Outcropping trail will take you there in about 20 minutes. There are several hiking trails for different preference. Great Woodland Adventure Trail and Hickory Nut Falls Trail are highly recommended for family hiking. A tip for family with small children, bring backpack carrier or rent it at the park for $8 as the trails are not suitable for stroller use.
