Pizza has been a staple food in our household. On a busy school night when I ran out of idea or time to cook, I typically gave in and picked up from our local pizza.

During our quick jaunt to St. Louis this past summer for our family reunion, we got a taste of St. Louis pizza style. After a quick search on Yelp & TripAdvisor, it seems Imo’s Pizza is one of the best choice.

Imo’s Pizza is the local chain that serves up original St. Louis style pizza. They have several locations in the area so it’s very convenient for us during our visit to the City Museum (one of the best and most fun museum EVER and I promise to write about our experience soon). We took a short walk from the City Museum to Imo’s Pizza Downtown on Washington.

The place looks bright and clean, perfect for a quick bite. We ordered at the counter and waited for our food.

For Miss J and Mr. Z, they will only eat Cheese pizza so Cheese pizza it is. I have to say I’m in love with St. Louis style pizza. The super thin, cracker-like crust pizza with Provel cheese instead of mozzarella that is cut into square pieces made it easier for the kids to enjoy. Plus I am not a big fan of thick crust to begin with so this pizza style satisfied me without making me felt too full.

We tried toasted ravioli which unfortunately I wasn’t fast enough to take picture before it was gone! We also ordered cheese sticks which was a big hit for the kids as well.

Overall, it was a great lunch before we headed back home. Definitely a place to visit if you love pizza.

During our Vancouver trip, I didn’t spend much time with Mr. Rojo and the kids because I was in Travel Blogger conference – TBEX. So we decided to give them a treat of the gigantic propotion after a long day with daddy that didn’t result in a bloodbath from either side.

We headed to the ultimate gelato wonderland, La Casa Gelato, where they would be able to choose from varieties of gelato goodness. La Casa Gelato is a local favorite and tourist attractions within itself. Judging from the pictures lining the wall of several famous people like Martha Stewart. With over 218 flavors available daily and more than 508 flavors, picking one will be a huge challenge.

We got there pretty late but it seemed this is the place to be on the Saturday night. The place was packed and loud with techno music to get the fun atmosphere going. They just need a disco light and it would be a party. There is no seating inside the store but across the street there is a little garden with outdoor seating available.

It can be overwhelming walking in and trying to figure out what you will have. The gelato selections are made from ingredients around the world from Wasabi, Akbar Mashti to Hazelnut Chocolate. But don’t worry you don’t have to make a commitment as soon as you walk in. You can try out any flavor you like and once you decide you can go to the cashier to purchase a token to get your ice cream.

Our first taste was based solely from our curiosity. Balsamic Vinegar gelato!! Seriously? Who would buy them? But we had to try it.

You can tell from Miss J’s face that it wasn’t something for our taste bud. However, surprisingly the employee told us that there are quite a few people who love them because otherwise they would never put it up.

We slowly made our way around the shop. (not that we tried every single flavor. That would be CRAZY!) I found the Asian section where Lychee, Durian and Mango were on display. I knew I had to try Durian to see how authentic the taste was. And I was pretty impressed with the taste because I felt like I was really eating a Durian fruit.

After a while, we each settled on our own favorite. A few notable options for me are Death by Mango, Durian, Papaya Rasberry Sorbeto, and Peanut Buttercup.

So if you are in Vancouver and look for a place to enjoy gelato experience, La Casa Gelato is definitely worth a visit.

As much as I want to say my kids are adventurous eaters who can devour new types of food from around the world, I accept the fact that they are not always willing to try new thing most of the time. I just have to slowly introduce new cuisine to them whether we are at home or on the road.

One of the easiest way to introduce new food is to find food that similar to their comfort food at home. And with that I shamelessly admit that they do love their hot dog. So when I heard, read and see about Japadog, a famous food truck in Vancouver that blend Japanese flavor to American favorite food, I know this is a must-try on our Vancouver trip.

The Japadog is a food truck so that means there is no table to sit, no servers and no restroom. But that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy our street food experience. With their population, Japadog operates in several locations where each location has their own special dog.

Fortunately, we stay at the hotel where it is just a block away from the Japadog at Burrard & Smithe Street corner. The selection is plentiful with topping from Japanese style of Edamame or my favorite, Oroshi with grated raddish & soy sauce to Terimayo series which you can choose from different type of hot dog type topped with mayo & dried seaweed.

And for kids who are not so sure about weird looking topping, you can order a normal hot dog for them. Another great option will be Yakisoba hot dog, a hot dog with yakisoba noodle topping. As for Mr. Rojo and me, we love the Oroshi. The grated radish is a great topping to counter the saltiness from hot dog. The popular Terimayo series hot dog is a little too salty for my taste but we tried it anyway. Who can resist Kobe beef hot dog!

My family can confirm my love of Pho and all things Vietnamese food. So during our visit to Seattle, it was not a surprise that one of our favorite meal (at least for me) was an unplanned dinner at Pho Than Brothers.

Yes, most of the time I tried to plan where we want to eat each day or at least have done some research. It was a must because there are so many places to eat in Seattle. But that day we were on our way back from Mount Rainier and it was late. Many restaurants I had in mind were already closed. Well, thanks to my Urbanspoon & Yelp iPhone app, we found our new destination.

Pho Than Brothers restaurant is a quite popular Vietnamese eatery with many locations throughout Seattle. We settled in at the Broadway location. It might be quite difficult if you don’t have a car to go there from downtown. It’s doable but not as easy.

The restaurant is in a lively neighborhood with many options for food and drinks. For us though, our main goal was food and more specifically steamy, huge bowl of Pho.

There is no frill at this restaurant. With a few decoration, it reminds me of how most of restaurants in Thailand look. It’s all in the taste of the food. Since it was quite late in the evening, we were seated right away. The menu is quite simple with different types of Pho (various varieties of meal) and sizes.

But above all else, we enjoyed the Banh Choux a la cream – a custard puff that was served before the meal. We couldn’t get enough of this dessert that we had to order more for our dessert after the meal.

The pho has 4 sizes from small, medium, large and extra large. I ordered the medium size and I think I might have been even happy with small size. Kids loved their noodle which they shared a small size bowl. It’s the universal food even for the most picky eater will enjoy.

The best part, this meal costs less than $20 for the 4 of us including dessert!

Typically on our vacation we opted for cheap and non-descriptive breakfast like cereal or oatmeal in the hotel room to help save money on our trip, but during my research for our Seattle trip with kids, I have found that there are many great breakfast options to pass up. Seattle is a great foodie town to begin with!

In general, we love to try as many new places as possible when we travel. However, in our recent Seattle trip we have found 2 favorite places for our breakfast that we went back again.

Scrumptious Crumpets at the Crumpet Shop

After reading many posts for Seattle restaurant recommendation from various sources from guidebook to online travel sites recommending the Crumpet Shop, we checked them out on our day to visit the Pike Place market.

The Crumpet Shop is located on Pike Place & 1st Ave. The shop has an huge window giving kids or pedestrians a glimpse of how these little pocket of deliciousness come to life.

What’s a crumpet exactly? Based on the owner, the crumpet has the look similar to English muffin but make on the griddle like pancake. The kids enjoyed looking at the kitchen where the crumpets were made.

With various options of toppings from simple butter & preserves to Green eggs & Ham, the Crumpet Shop offered us a great way to start up our day. We ordered the crumpet with butter & blackberry and crumpet with eggs & ham. The second time around, we opted for the green eggs & ham crumpet. All I can say is that the crumpets had never disappointed us during our visits. (3 times but who is counting?)

A few tips to make your visit more pleasant,

Arrive before the breakfast or lunch crowd to avoid the long line. It can get pretty busy here in this tiny space.

There are a couple table outside on the street side. Yes, you might have to inhale the smoke from the car but you will enjoy the view of the kitchen and see the crumpet in a making.

In the morning, they offer special discount for happy hour during 7am-8am. The early bird gets the big worms!

Bacon & Belgian Waffle at Sweet Iron Waffle

Mr. Z has been a lover of bacon and waffle for a really long time (as long as he can voice his own preference). So after trying to figure out what to have for breakfast one morning, the trusty Yelp app on my iPhone show that there was a breakfast place right around the corner from Hotel Monaco Seattle where we stayed. So off we went…

The Sweet Iron Waffle is located on 3rd Ave between University & Seneca. With a small shop where half the space is behind the glass counter top where their Liège, Belgium style waffles are made, seating is limited. We saw many people just ordered to-go. Kids were more interested in the science behind the making of their orders.

As expected, Mr. Z went for the bacon waffle which made him a very very happy boy that day! I believed he even claimed it was the best day of his life and it was just 9AM that day!

What I loved even more was the commitment I could see from the shop to sustainability. All utensils are made of compostable material and they also support local organic farmers and Seattle businesses when possible.

After a full 2 weeks on our Pacific Northwest trip, we are finally home. We are still recovering from our trip. But today I just want to share one of our fond memory with food trucks experience in Seattle.

Seattle is definitely one of top foodie city I have visited. The varieties and quality of food & restaurants are one that we enjoyed tremendously during our trip.

We have spent just over a week in Seattle exploring and eating our way through the water front and Pike Place market. There will definitely be a more detail post on our many favorite eats soon.

For now, we want to share our family favorite food trucks in downtown Seattle.

The Maximus-Minimus: It’s Some Pig!

I have read about the Maximus-Minimus food truck online and made note to try to find them. Luckily, they are easy to find in Seattle. Locate at the parking lot at the SE corner of Pike St. & 2nd Ave it’s hard to miss this masculine looking pig truck.

The Maximus-Minimus like all other food trucks offers only a few items on their menu. That’s the whole point of the food truck, quality not quantity. Their menu features pulled pork sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich and veggie sandwich with a couple sides.

Coming from Atlanta where pull pork sandwich is almost as plentiful as drugstore in every corner in town, Mr. Rojo who has the affinity for all things barbeque gave 2 thumbs up for his pull pork sandwich from Maximus Minimus.

Street Donuts: Your Customized Mini Donuts

Right next to Maximus-Minimus truck in the same parking lot, the kids enjoyed their treat from Street Donuts truck where they ordered their own customized donuts by choosing from various choices of flavors to make their own topping.

Ms. J & Mr. Z enjoyed watching the donuts going through the conveyor belt and choosing their own topping. With creative topping like Nerds or typical topping like Cinnamon, the combination that you can create is plentiful. In the end, Miss J settled with Nerds & chocolate and it was one yummy creation!

What is your favorite food trucks in Seattle?

When we visited Disney’s Animal Kingdom park on our recent trip to Walt Disney World, one of the must-do on our list was to ride the Expedition Everest. As we walked along the path to the Expedition Everest area, the smell from Yak & Yeti restaurant was so enticing. It was so good we almost made a quick turn to the restaurant right away. It was almost lunch time and our stomach reminded us all that THIS was a place to enjoy our lunch.

However, knowing that we would be on a roller coaster soon, we determined to push along the path to Everest. It was the hardest thing we had to do that day to walk past the inviting aroma.

It was a great decision on our part because once we got back from the ride it was late afternoon and there was relatively short wait to be seated.

An indoor, air-conditioned restaurant was a perfect choice for us especially on the hot day. In the past we had always battled the crowd and heat to have lunch at Tamu Tamu Refreshments – Harambe because we thought it was the cheapest alternative and the quickest.

But after experiencing Yak & Yeti restaurant, I have found a new dining option in this huge park.

Yes, at first glance at the menu the price is not what I will call affordable. However, after studying (yes, studying) a menu, I found that there were ways to enjoy the meal without shelling out $20 per person. Here are my tips.

1. Let Kids Share the Kids’ Meal – Miss J & Mr. Z were not big eaters. So I knew that they would be satisfied with sharing a meal. We ordered chicken bites with a side of chicken fried rice. Miss J took care of the fried rice and Mr. Z enjoyed the chicken bites.

2. Get 2 side dishes to make a meal - I ordered 2 side dishes of Stir-Fried Vegetables and Steam rice to make a great meal for under $9 while the cheapest entree on the menu is $16.99.

3. Split the adult entree – Yes, it’s pricey for an entree to cost $17-$25 but all thing considered the portion is considerably large. Unless you always eat a large portion at home, I’m pretty sure you can split the meal and everyone still has a fulfilling meal.

So if you plan to visit Animal Kingdom and don’t plan to pack your own lunch (which is probably the best way to save on dining), consider Yak & Yeti Restaurant. Mr. Rojo probably recommend you to try the Kobe Beef Burger.. Oh!! It was so tender and tasty. The size of the burger is big enough to share as well.

From the frequent of my post about McDonald’s fast food chain, you will think that I work for them or such a bad mom with no regard of health to her kids. Well, I’m not working or get paid by McDonald’s. And we typically eat at McDonald’s only once a week (ok this one is just a joke!! Plus there are ways to have a quick meal with relatively healthy meal)

But I can’t help featuring a cool McDonald’s we have come across during our travel. It’s just refreshing to see a franchise owner put in a lot of thought and effort into making their McDonald’s stood out.

On our way to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, we stopped for a quick lunch break before checking-in at this McDonald’s inside the Walt Disney World area. As soon as we parked we already knew that this one has something different from other typical McD you found along the highway. The front entrance has a shade area with whimsical outdoor seating. Bamboo trees lined up the wall provides a sense of peace even during a busy lunch time.

Walking inside, I wasn’t sure if we were in the same fast food chain that we love to hate. But yet, there it was a sign welcoming you from them.

The seating area are large and open with colorful chairs suited for lifting up your mood and getting you ready for a day inside the Happiest Place on Earth.

It’s only appropriate that with its close distance to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, they have thought about family in their design. A smaller size stools in front of TV playing Disney’s cartoon has given kids their own space to enjoy their meals.

Overall, it’s a great way to have a quick and cheap meal before hitting up Disney’s theme parks. Kids loved the outdoor seating where they could sit back and relax a bit and I loved the clean design with colorful furniture. Because sometimes a meal is not just about the food but the ambiance as well.

What’s for lunch? Ah, the old-age question that I really don’t want to hear especially when we travel as a family. Sometimes it’s hard to please everyone in the family for the options we have. I mean technically my kids probably can survive on cheese pizza alone. But who want to eat cheese pizza on your vacation? Ok.. don’t answer that!

Fun Family Dining Option in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

So in order to add a little fun to our lunch, we opted for one of theme restaurant inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios – the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre. The restaurant is modeled after drive-in theatre where you can dine in the 50′s car and enjoy B movies on the big screen under the stars.

Sound like something that will please my kids especially after a long day in the Disney’s park.

Food & Flick at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre

After we checked in with the host who took us to be seated at our CAR, we walked through what looked like a backstage of a movie set. Then a little doorway lead us into what I feel like a totally different world. We stepped into the time where families went to the theatre in their cars and enjoyed movie and dinner. That’s what the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre is all about.

Inside you will see rows of cars facing the big screen just like you would see at the drive-in theatre. Car can seat up to 6 people where small car will seat 4 people. So for a big party, you have to be willing to split the group. Since there is no way for them to move the car around. The restaurant might seem a little bit dark because we were dining out under the stars after all. But there were enough lighting at our car for us to check out the menu.

How about Food & Price?

Food serves in the restaurant is typical American fare with burger, pasta and sandwich. Quite frankly, this will probably be the worst review of a restaurant ever because I didn’t remember what we had. But sometimes, the food doesn’t matter as much as the experience and atmosphere in which the Sci-Fi Dine-In theatre certainly provided us with memorable experience.

Kids truly enjoyed eating and watching movies from the 50′s and 60′s. Then again, which kids don’t love to watch movie and eat at the same time. I just had to remind them that it won’t happen at home. :)

With the main course range from $11.99 to $19.99, this is not a cheap eat by any measure. However, I viewed it as an experience that we will not have a chance to do often. So it all depends on how much price tag you put on the experience. For us, it’s worth it for a fun time during lunch with good food.

There is no doubt that one of the most sought after product inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the Butterbeer. A silky, smooth and sweet drink that remind me of ‘Got Milk?’ commercial is one of the most talk about for visitors to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Even if you don’t want to buy anything else there (which I don’t think it’s even remotely possible), you MUST try the Butterbeer.

Everywhere we would see visitors walked around with a mug and a mustache. There are 2 version of Butterbeer in the Wizarding World’s, the frozen and non-frozen ones. I have only tasted the non-frozen one but have heard that the frozen version was far better.

Mr. Rojo had not just one but two Butterbeer during our visit. And when we came home, he craved for more. So we did a little research to see if it’s possible to make one at home. With the world according to Google, there is nothing you couldn’t find online.

I have found several recipes for Harry Potter Butterbeer and they are all varied in ingredients. So we decided to just pick one.

Here is the recipe for Harry Potter Butterbeer as we found on Foxnews.com

BUTTERBEER Recipe

Start to finish: 1 hour (10 minutes active)

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

1 cup light or dark brown sugar

2 tablespoons water

6 tablespoon butter

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar

3/4 cup heavy cream, divided

1/2 teaspoon rum extract

Four 12-ounce bottles cream soda

Directions:

1. In a small saucepan over medium, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook, stirring often, until the mixture reads 240 F on a candy thermometer.

2. Stir in the butter, salt, vinegar and 1/4 heavy cream. Set aside to cool to room temperature.

3. Once the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.

4. In a medium bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture and the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Use an electric mixer to beat until just thickened, but not completely whipped, about 2 to 3 minutes.

5. To serve, divide the brown sugar mixture between 4 tall glasses (about 1/4 cup for each glass). Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass, then stir to combine. Fill each glass nearly to the top with additional cream soda, then spoon the whipped topping over each.

The Verdict

It is NOT the same as the Butterbeer you can get inside Universal’s Islands of Adventure but it’s close enough. I still would love to know how to make the frozen version though. In the mean time, we will just be satisfied with this version and dream about our next visit!

On the first morning of our Galinburg trip, we woke up fashionably late as we normally do on our vacation. The agenda for that day was to explore Gatlinburg as much as we could. So the big breakfast was called for.

Typically, when we stay at the suite hotel with kitchen, we bought grocery to stock up for breakfast. But this trip, I wanted to try out a few local eateries.

Our first stop was the Log Cabin Pancake House which conveniently located right across the street from the Holiday Inn Club Vacations Smoky Mountain Resort. Even before we walked inside, this place already grabbed our full attention with a chuck wagon sticking out from their roof top. Now, that’s where we want to have our country style breakfast.

The Log Cabin Pancake House seems to be a local favorite for both breakfast and lunch. The place was filled with families in big tables all around the huge fireplace enjoying scrumptious breakfast.

The breakfast menu has what you will normally expect from the pancake house. With varieties of pancake and waffle, it made an indecisive person like me felt rather lost.

Mr. Rojo, on the other hand, knew exactly what he wanted right away. For a big Reese fan, the Butterscotch Chip Pancake was a perfect dish to satisfy your craving for peanut butter cup. Kids also had many choices for from their Jr. menu where they could choose from waffle, pancake, and french toast.

After a big meal, we checked out the little shopping area inside the restaurant filled with funny signs and souvenirs. I guess when you are in the tourist destination, it’s easy to find souvenirs even in a restaurant. I, however, loved the long front patio lined with rocking chairs.

This place was definitely a great place for breakfast. Like most other restaurants in tourist town, the price seems to be on the higher side of the fence for us. We spent almost $40 for a family of 4 for breakfast. Well, that’s what we normally spend on eating out for dinner!

For Thanksgiving break, our family travel to Florida to get some fun in the sunny Kissimmee and Orlando. I was also blogging about our experience at Visit Kissimmee Blog.

We seem to go to Florida at least once a year. It may be because the nostalgic reason that pulls us back from living there for almost 10 years or the magical pixie dust from Walt Disney World. But for whatever reason, after numerous road trips down I-75 from Atlanta to Orlando, never once did we stopped at Cracker Barrel.

But it was changed on this trip. We visit Cracker Barrel not once but twice during our trip in Florida. The first visit was during our road trip down from Atlanta.

Family Friendly Stop Along the Highway

Cracker Barrel is a chain restaurant that you can easily find along the highway in most states. It’s not just a restaurant though. It’s an old country style restaurant and store.

On our visit, we were on a road for almost 10 hours for what should have been an 8 hours road trip (that will be another post in another time). So we were in need of a break. A real break not just a quick stop at the rest area or a drive-thru at McDonald. So we decided to stop at Cracker Barrel for dinner and enjoyed a sit down meal to stretch our legs.

The front porch invites you to sit down and enjoy a leisure evening with a set of chess ready for you for a match with your kids.

As soon as you walk inside the store, you will be overwhelmed with various products in the store. It’s the old country store similar to Mast General Store in Asheville. Needless to say, my kids’ mood had shifted from being grumpy to happy in an instant. That’s a good sign in my book.

Even with the evening hour, the restaurant is rather empty with plenty of tables so we got seated right away.

The food.. oh.. the food.. hmm.. How should I say this? I think the food is nothing to write home about. It’s typical southern comfort food. Or it might be a long drive that subdue my appetite. Mr. Rojo said his breakfast meal was pretty good though. So you might want to try out the breakfast menu instead. They do serve breakfast all day. But we did enjoy our fun on the peg game that was available on each table. We loved it so much that we bought one for each kid so they can practice and become a genius.

After the meal, that’s when the fun started. We took our time checking out the store. I love to check out the old toy and other snacks. Too bad that it was late in the evening so candies was out of the question for this trip. It was a good call on our part to stop here.

Another neat feature that make Cracker Barrel unique is the ‘Books-On-Audio’ rental program. Basically, you can rent an audio book for $3.49 per week and return at ANY Cracker Barrel. It’s a great cheap entertainment option on a road.

So if you are on a long road trip and look for a break, Cracker Barrel might not be a local restaurant but in a pinch it’s a great stop for kids and adults as well.

There is no word to describe the excitement of Miss J and Mr. Z as their eyes glazed across the street to the double deck bus while we were waiting at the traffic light during our walk in downtown Asheville. They didn’t know what to think of it. They didn’t know they could actually go inside and order drinks or snacks.

But as soon as we stopped and headed into this little sanctuary – the Double D’s Coffee & Desserts, they were ecstatic.

The Double D’s Coffee & Desserts is a renovated retired bus from the British public transit that provide a fun family-friendly environment with a twist. This place is a great addition to a town that already fills with great places to eat or as I claim a foodie heaven town.

Miss J couldn’t wait to get inside and inspect the whole bus.

As we stepped in, we were greeted with the stairs leading us up to the upper deck. After we ordered our desserts without coffee because we didn’t have enough cash (so bring CASH), the kids were already upstairs and waited in one of the chalkboard table.

The interior is nicely decorated with fun whimsical touch. There are about 6 tables in the main area and then the front row seat where we enjoyed watching people walking by along the Biltmore Avenue.

For a family who plan to visit Asheville with kids, I would recommend spend a leisure afternoon at this quirky and fun coffee place. The menu is extensive with organic fair-trade coffee and desserts. It’s also good to know that they also provide free wifi just in case you want to work. It’s a great fun family friendly environment. But one downside, there is no bathroom on premise. So expect this to be a short visit.

Family Tips:

Bring cash or check

There is seating area outside around the bus so parent with stroller can also enjoy a cup of joe outside

There is no restroom on premise so plan accordingly

This Chinese origin dish is one of the main staple of Thai people. The chicken is boiled in the salted water and the rice is cooked from that chicken stock along with ginger and garlic. Then it will be served up with cucumber and green onion garnish with salted-bean sauce.

With it’s simplicity yet savory taste, no wonder you can find this dish in almost every corner in Thailand.

For the very popular restaurant, this dish might be the only dish they sell and yet there might not be any available seats in the restaurant during the rush lunch hour.

The Scene Behind a Great Dish

Be warned though that most of the time, THIS will be what you will see as well.

The row of cooked chicken hanging by the neck as the cook works efficiently to cut up the chicken. For most, it might seem too gruesome for a lunch scene but for many it’s an easy way to spot your favorite dish.

I don’t know if Mr. Rojo had seen this, would he still try Khao Mun Gai in the first place. But for now, his love for this dish is unwavering.

Thailand is known as the land of smiles. But we are also known for an array of food choices that accessible 24/7.

However, when we first arrived in Thailand, it’s very advisable to be cautious at where you eat. As much as I want to chow down on the first street food I ran into, we had to ease ourselves slowly to the food scene in Bangkok.

Street food is definitely my favorite place to satisfy my Thai food craving BUT my family especially Miss J and Mr. Z were not quite ready for that type of adventure yet.

Safe and Great Food Options in Bangkok: Mall Food Court

The next best option is the shopping mall food court.

Well, before you scoff at the food court option because you think it’s the typical fast food chains similar to the United States then you might want to hold that thought.

The food court in most major shopping malls in Bangkok is huge and abundant with different types of food from Thai noodle dishes, rice dishes, fruit smoothies drinks, snacks and fresh fruits. Typically it will be either on the ground floor or the top floor of the mall. This is where you can get relatively cheap food without sacrifice the quality.

Our Family Pick: Siam Paragon Food Court

Our family favorite food court in Bangkok so far is the basement floor of Siam Paragon. With the convenient location at the center stop of Bangkok BTS and the home of Siam Ocean World, the Siam Paragon had become our regular stop for lunch and dinner.

The table top aquariums scattering all around the food court area are a great option for family with children. While I took my time deciding what to eat, Mr. Rojo and the kids could wait and enjoy spotting different fish in the tank.

The Training of Food Adventurer

For kids who grew up in America with mac & cheese and spaghetti meatballs, eating in Thailand can be intimidating. But with a little bit of encouraging and compromising, they could have a great experience trying new food.

I ordered Thai noodle soup with fishballs (Kuay Tiew Nam) without much of the veggie or garnish per Miss J’s instruction and it had become her new favorite dish.

My favorite dish? Too many to list but that day I settled for boat noodle soup (Kuay Tiew Ruea) and followed by seafood in red bean curd soup without noodle (Khao Lao Yen Ta Pho Talay).

Does this make you hungry for more food? Then check out other food post from around the world at Wander Food Wednesday.

Would you be able to guess where is this place by looking at the menu?

Probably a typical Italian place maybe?

Nope. Not that.. It’s McDonald

Yup! This is a McDonald in Orlando that is also advertised as the World Largest McDonald Play Area.

How did we know it’s the World Largest McDonald Play Area and get sucked into this place? Well, that happened when your kids now learn to read and request to have input on the dining choices!

When we first walked in, we were overwhelmed by the decoration and choices on the menu. It seemed like we were walking into a twilight zone. It’s so NOT McDonald.

The food selections are so different from the typical McDonald menu that it took us a while to decide what we want. The food selections range from breakfast items like Belgian Waffle, Breakfast Enchiladas to pasta and ice cream.

Miss J ended up with Ravioli that took way longer than we hoped for. And Mr. Z was not swayed by all these choices and remained a faithful chicken nuggets fan.

So if you are looking for a semi-fast food that has more selections than your typical burger and fries, then this McDonald might be a good stop after a long day of Disney Parks or Orlando attractions.

However, just a warning that this place does have a huge play area that your kids will probably want to spend time and money in games. So it might not be as fast as you want. Also it can get crowd even with the huge space!

Today I participate in Wander Food Wednesday. So head over to Wander Food for food fun around the world.

As we plan our Summer trip to Thailand and check out the ticket price, I am SO not prepare to spend more than $1,000 per ticket to get there but I digress..

Traveling to Asia might seem like an out of reach for many families due to high cost in ticket. But don’t let that prevent you and your family from enjoying and learning about the East culture. A trip to any Asian grocery store will give you a glimpse and will provide you with a fun day of exploring.

We are very fortunate to have lived in Atlanta where there is a big population of Asians and countless opportunities for us to enjoy Asian cultures without living town.

Every once in a while I take my kids to the Asia/International Supermarket like Super H Mart or Assi Supermarket in town. This mega supermarket sells all things international but mainly focuses on Asian.

Our first stop has always been the food court within the market itself. This is a great place for you to try out different food without breaking the bank. I have been craving Korean food – Kimchi Fried Rice for a while. So I was so pleased to taste it in the hot stone bowl.

I ordered Ramyeon – Korean Instant Noodle soup for Miss J. Yeah.. It’s something we can probably make it at home but where else can I serve it up in this cool hot pot for her.

Environment sure does help encourage kids to try new thing. Even though, my kids are 100% Asian (Thai and Filipino). They still don’t know how to use chopsticks nor do we use it on a regular basis. I was so proud to see her eating her noodle with chopsticks and she seemed to have a lot of fun with it.

After the meal, it’s the fun part. The walk around the store is my favorite part and my most dangerous part. I tend to grab everything I can find. Japanese rice cake in multi-color looks too good to pass up. The mochi ice cream (which I finished it before I could take any pictures) is a different take on ice cream. Thinking of it as rice cake with ice cream filling.. Yum!!!

If Mr. Rojo wasn’t there with us and encouraged (nagged) us to go home, I probably would spend hours and hours there and filled up my grocery cart to the brim.

This is one of the best way for us to introduce our kids to Asian cultures before the big trip. It might not give them the real perspective but it sure will open their eyes to the new things.

Super H Mart and Assi Plaza (Lotte Plaza) has several stores in various states.

Food is one of the 3 main component in our travel – what to do, where to eat and where to stay. I think we have covered a lot of what to do in San Diego in the past few weeks.

But it’s so typical of us that we didn’t get to taste as many great places as we would love to. Spending a whole day in a park certainly cut our chances to taste out many family-friendly restaurants on our list.

Nevertheless, we were able to finish off a couple and would love to share with you.

Covette Diner – Family-Friendly Fun Food

On our first night, we made a plan to meet up with my lovely blogger friend, Coleen from Travel Mamas. Coleen is a San Diego resident so I trust her in guiding us to a great place to eat. And she didn’t disappoint.

We met up at the Covette Diner in Liberty Station. It’s their new location in a revitalize History Navy Training Center. The place is a giant fun house for kids and ahem.. adults too.

As soon as you stepped in, you knew this is a place where kids can enjoy and adults don’t have to worry about melt down. The staffs are friendly and very well into the character of the 50s theme.

There was a dance break for all of us to enjoy and join in if you dare. :)

The food was also pretty good.. Ok.. I didn’t pay that much attention to the food to be honest because I was already full from the huge appetizer plate and milkshake.. Ah.. The milkshake is what they are famous for. You can order it so many ways that I think Starbucks will not want to compete with their combination. And if they don’t have it in the menu, you can even create your own creation!

While you wait for the table, or the food or after the food, little ones can enjoy the arcade type area with fun games.

Overall, it was a great fun experience especially sharing with good friends. Thank you Colleen for the recommendation. This is definitely a great choice for family friendly restaurant in San Diego.

The In-N-Out Experience

In-N-Out Burger joint is the local fast food joint that I have heard so much about. Whenever I talk to my neighbor who moved from Southern CA, they always talk about how much they miss In-N-Out. So we just have to give it a try.

The place reminds me a little bit of Krystal burger but with more clients and better burger. We went there during dinner time and the place was packed.

The menu is very simple but we learned after the fact that there is a secret menu! Hmm.. Next time, we might have to try that out. The price is very affordable for everyone. But burger is burger. Don’t expect that this will be a healthy choice for the whole family.

The burger itself is ok but I guess for the price it makes a better alternative than McD. The burger does taste better and seems with better ingredient than your typical fast food burger joint.

But don’t take my word for it. I’m not a big fan of any burger by nature. I still don’t get why the Varsity is so popular in Atlanta. It’s a good stop when you look for a quick meal that don’t break the bank. Another big plus is you don’t have to worry about if your kids will behave here. It’s a burger joint after all.

If you’re on the lookout for the best cuisine in this part of California, read San Diego restaurant reviews to get an idea where you can have it.

(Don’t you love that list? Must-Eat..Who can resist a must-eat list.) With trying to do a budget travel that doesn’t compromise the experience, I planned our trip down to the hours.. Yup.. I’m crazy that way. Asked Mr. Rojo. I had a spreadsheet on what we would do and eat each day. Well, I like to know the plan but we didn’t necessarily stick to the plan. In order to save some doughs, we plan to eat out during lunch and cook our own dinner at the condo. I chose easy meal for dinner like Hamburger Helper, Taco Dinner Kit and Publix Chicken on my menu.

On the first day, we arrived later than we thought. So the lunch was McD along the way. Then dinner was Publix chicken. Nice and easy plus with a long drive from GA we didn’t want to bother with cranky kids in the restaurant.

Our first stop on the list was McGuire Irish Pub. We went there right before lunch so we didn’t have to wait at all. The first thing you will notice when you walk in is thousands of dollar bills on the ceiling, on the wall and everywhere else around the restaurant. It is a tradition started with friends of the owner gave him the dollar bill and signed his name. The owner then put it up on the wall. And one by one now they have almost half a million bills on their wall. Amazing!

The food was amazing! I had cornbeef and cabbage.. Oh. It was so yummy and huge. I didn’t think I could finish it but I did! The cabbage had sweet taste the compliment with the cornbeef perfectly. Mr. Rojo got Fish and Chips..

By far I think it was the best Fish and Chips I have had. It was crispy enough but not too hard. The breading was perfectly… Yum-O… Also make sure you pay attention when you ready to freshen up and head to the bathroom. See the sign? Better read before heading to the Men room or you thought.

The next morning, we went a bit further toward Seaside and stopped by the famous Donut Hole. The food was great and the donuts was even better. After a big plate of brunch and a full dozen donuts, we were ready to roll and check out seaside.. Check back later for posts on what we did in Destin and beyond!

I love to eat but I have to admit that I am not a cook by nature. I cook out of necessity. So I always surf and check out other great food blogs for inspiration and recipes. Here are my top five finds for this week.

1. Lunch Nugget – A great blog for any family looking for a more creative and heathtier way to pack lunch for their school-age kids. I love the picture for each post since I’m such a visual person. I won’t even look at any recipe that doesn’t have the picture. So this is my life-saver blog.

2. Thai Table – A great Thai recipe site with step-by-step instruction. I cook Thai food once in a while. Just because sometimes I feel like it. And no, I am not a great cook for Thai food so don’t ask me to cook Pad Thai for you. Sorry, not all Thai people can cook. Or should I say my Thai food standard is very high so if I can’t make it taste like what I ate in Thailand then I won’t bother.

3. Closet Cooking – I found this blog via Cheap Healthy Good. A great simple blog with great photo and recipe. The simple cooking is my kind of cooking.

4. Steamy Kitchen – Jaden’s blog for the modern asian food with great simple recipe is not a new blog that I just found. I have been following her for a while.

5. Chez Pim – I’m so so behind in the Blog world. I’m sure everyone knew about Chez Pim’s blog but I just recently discovered her via my fellow Thai blogger – Oakmonster’s Den.

It’s true that there are a lot of Thai restaurants in the US. But I have to break the news to all Thai food lover that the variety we have here is nothing compare to the food we can eat, consume, stuff-till-you-hurt in Thailand. Here are just some of the Thai dish I really miss.

1. Thai Boat Noodle (Kuay-Tiaw Ruea) – This is my favorite noodle dish. The traditional dish was originated from the way they sold this noodle by way of boat. Hence, boat-style noodle. The dish is spicy and tasty.

2. Thai Ox Tail Soup – The muslim influenced dish from the Southern part of Thailand is always on the top of my to-eat list whenever I go back to Thailand. The soup is clear not as stewy like the caribbean style (I do love that as well). The taste is more sour and spicy. The meat is so tender that it falls off the bone.

3. Streamed Curry Cup (Hor Mok) – My favorite to-go food in Thailand. It’s convenient food that I can eat so many of them in one sitting with just rice. Made from fish, coconut milk and basil leaves and steam in the banana leaf cup. Oh.. How yummy!

4. Steamed Shrimp with Glass Noodle (Koong Op Woon Send) – This delicious shrimp dish is cooked in the clay pot with glass noodle seasoned with soy sauce, oyster sauce, whole peppercorn and topped with green onion, chinese celery and cilantro. It seems like an easy recipe but hard to pull it off. In Thailand, I don’t bother to learn how to cook this dish.. Just have to find the best restaurant for this one.

Thai Rice Noodle with spicy curry (Kha-nom Jeen) – Fresh rice noodle topped with curry and fresh vegetable. This dish can be had in various way depend on what kind of curry you like. We have fish curry (Nam Ya), sweet curry (Nam Prik), spicy Southern style curry (Nam Ya Pak Tai). It’s also perfect food for people on diet since you can load it up with fresh veggies of basil leaves, bean sprout, cabbages or other kinds of vegetable you like.

6. Flash-fried Morning Glory (Phat Phak Boong) – A quick dish for a late night meal. It’s a very quick and easy dish that is best when eat while it’s still hot.

7. Stir fried Rice Noodle (Pad See Ew) – This is one of the popular dish in Thai restaurant here but they have it all wrong. Pad See Ew in Thailand doesn’t have any other veggies in there.. No broccoli or pepper or onion. The real Pad See Ew is a really simple street food in Thailand. It is made with rice noodle, egg, pork, garlic, dark soy sauce, and chinese broccoli. It’s easy recipe but hard to make it taste good. The taste should be on the sweet side and a bit oily.. Yup.. It’s so good that it’s so bad for you.

8. Southern Thai Rice (Khao Yum) – This is my favorite breakfast when I was a kid. We were from the Southern part of Thailand and there are several dishes that you can’t find it anywhere in Bangkok. Khao Yum is part of the Southern food. Basically, it’s the rice salad with boo-doo sauce on the top. The topping for Khao Yum has a lot of nutrient in there including fruits, veggie and seafood. It’s all-in-one dish. The taste can be very distinctive and might not be for every taste buds. But this is my childhood dish. I miss it dearly.

9. Sweet Stewed Pork & Egg (Kai Pa-Lo) – A chinese dish that I have had since I can remember. It’s good for especially for the 2nd or 3rd days after it’s been cooked. We used to boil more eggs and dropped it in for later days. Perfect with steam rice.

10. Thai Sukiyaki – Thais are pack creatures. We like to stay in group especially when we go out and eat. Sukiyaki is a perfect get together meal. But it might make Americans feel uneasy when you have to dip your food in the pot that share by everyone else. You will think that we don’t want to eat something like hot soup in Thai’s hot tropical climate..but you will be surprised.

11. Liver Salad (Tap Waan) – Another side dish that you can typically see serving with sticky rice. This is another Thai salad dish with young liver. The liver has to be cooked at the right temperature for the perfect soft and sweet taste. It’s not easy as liver can give a real bad taste if you don’t know how to cook it.

12. Chicken and Rice (Kao Mun Gai) – This one dish wonder is my favorite.. You will notice now that I have more than many favorites. I can’t pick just one. It will depend on the mood. This is a rather simple dish.. The rice is cooked in
chicken stock and make it rich-fatty taste and then topped with chicken. Served with chicken stock soup and ginger&soy bean sauce.

13. Thai Fish Cake (Todd Man Pla) – This side dish is served with spicy dipping sauce and garnish of cucumber. The fish cake are made from soft fish, green beans, and starch.

OH.. Boy!! I’m starving!!! What are the food you would love to have right now?

Songkran is a traditional Thai New Year that celebrate by all Thais on April 13 and the festival is lasted for 3 days. It likes a Christmas of Thailand. People will go home and celebrate with their families. The festival in Thailand is a combination of religious practice and party. In the morning, people will normally go to temple to give the offering to the monk and receive the blessing from the monks. Then they will go out and celebrate by giving water to each other. In my youth years, it was all fun. We would pack a water balloon and waited out by the street and threw it to the pass-by pedestians or vehicles. It was a fun and wet day indeed.

We went to Wat Buddha Bucha (which is the only Thai temple I know in Atlanta area) for the Songkran festival this year so that my kids will get to experience Thai culture. I have to say that I was overwhelming with the crowds and we didn’t get to spend much time there. The place was rather small. I guess being from Florida where there are a rather large group of Thais there. The temple there has more supports and donations so they can build a rather authentic Thai temple that reminds myself of Thailand.

In the morning, people lined up to offer food and other necessary items to the monks and receive the blessing. We walked around to check out some of the local Thai food. I was rather disappointed at the quality of the food. The taste wasn’t as good as I expected. Plus the varieties are minimal at best. However, I managed to pig myself out for the whole morning. What can I say.. I can eat anything even if it’s not that great!

This week I have been on the world tour for lunch time. Normally, I pack lunch for work (not by choice but more by necessicity). However, with the cold snap this week along with the laziness that build up in me we have been ignoring our lunch we packed in the past few days. And when we eat out, I love to eat in the ethnic food restaurant rather than typical chain restaurant. It just makes me feel a bit more like I’m on my little vacation.

I’m a very easy eater. If it doesn’t taste so bad, I will probably eat it all. So I’m not a really good food critic.

First stop for this week is Papoulis Mediterranean Cafe. It’s a good size, quick bite Greek cafe. The food is fabulous especially Gyro Beef & Lamb. The cucumber salad that comes with it is fresh and tasty. The deco is nicely done with a huge map of that part of the world on the wall. There is little corner with cook book, snack, cheese and other ingredients that you might find in a Mediterranean market there. Plus the price is very reasonable ranging from $3-9 depends on what you order and how big your appetite is that day. It’s a quick escape to a little Greek in the middle of the South.

Our second stop of the week is Darvish Persian Teahouse. What a great place to try the authentic Persian food and take in the real atmosphere of the Persian Teahouse. The decoration puts you right in the Persian teahouse. Ok.. I have never been to one but a co-worker who came from there said it’s pretty close. I just felt like I have stepped into another world away. Now, it doesn’t mean that the deco will be the only thing that will impress you. The food is … fabuuuuuuloussssss. I ate and ate till I felt the pain.

We went during lunch on the weekday and they had the buffer all-you-can-eat for $7.99. Great price considering what we had. I started off with Rice and Gourmet Sabzi (a blend of green herbs), Gheimeh (tomato stew), Kashk-o-Bodenjan (a delicious blend of eggplant in a golden sweet onion) and grilled veggie. Then I moved on to the real heavy stuff. The Kabob-e-Kubideh (ground beef), Kabob-e-Barg (tenderloin) and Joojeh Kabob.. Yum yum.. I finished up my meal with Hot Persian tea. It had an amazing aroma. That wrapped out our perfect meal.

If you go during weekend evening, you will get to enjoy the entertainment as well. I haven’t tried that yet but you bet that it is on my to-do list already.

What can be better than trying a little bit of different cultures without breaking the bank! I know that it can’t compare to the real experience but at least it gives me the taste of what is the real experience can be magnified once we get there one day. :)

I couldn’t just go back to Thailand and only spend a day in Bangkok. Most of you might ask why it took me so long to blog about Thailand. Truth be told, there are so many great places in Thailand that I’m at the lost and don’t even know where to start.

Last year, we went back to Thailand to visit my family. This is something I try to do every two years. I would love to be able to do it every year. But tickets for 4 can run around $4000 so unless I win any lotto anytime soon this will have to be bi-annual trip. Each time when we go back I try to plan several small trips to visit many parts of Thailand.

Thailand is an amazing place to visit. We have different flavors to please various taste. There are beaches in the South, mountains in the North, city in Bangkok, old ruins in the Center. I can go on and on.. Plus you can’t go to Thailand and not be overwhelmed by the varieties of food you can get. We are Thais and we love to eat. I’m not food expert I will leave that up to my friend on her blog (kelly-licious).

This trip is no different. I have a long list of things to do and buy, places to visit and food to eat. Of course, families to visit is on my list as well but that’s a given. :)

As soon as we landed (right around midnight) and by the time we left the airport which was around 2AM, we headed to my family favorite chinese restaurant, Nguan Lee. It’s one of this place that has no fancy deco just plain tables and chairs. Gotta put food on the first priority to have energy to do anything else. :)

I had planned a few places to go in Bangkok this trip. My husband has been there 3-4 times but it will take more than that to experience Thailand to the fullest.

We headed to Royal Thai Palace and Wat Pra Kaew (Temple of Emerald Budha). Being Thai and living in Bangkok for over 20 years, the last time I was there I was 10 years old. So a lots have changed. This was our second attempt to go there. Last time, we didn’t know that he had to wear long pants. You can’t wear short, flip flop, or sandal. And I believe for female you should dress properly to show respect to the place.

It was a typical weather in Thailand.. HOT.. So I knew that we won’t be spending too much time in there. We picked up a headset for self-guided. I’m not a history buff so I will take any help I can get. The visit was long enough to wear everyone out. One thing to keep in mind when going to Thailand. Whatever you plan to do, plan to accomplish maybe even less as heat will get to you sooner than you think.

The next stop on our list is ‘Muang Boran – Ancient City’. It’s located just outside Bangkok. You probably couldn’t tell where Bangkok ends and where another province begins. It’s all blended in together these days with all the people moves to our capital city. To get there, the best advice I could get is to hire a taxi or mini van. There is no easy public transportation.

Plus when you are in there the place is so huge, you can’t really walk from one to another. You can rent a bike. It will be a nice exercise giving it isn’t a hot day (which is highly unlikely for that to happen here). My sister arranged the van to pick us up and we headed there. It was nice to learn about different histories in different parts of my country. This is like an overview of what we have to offer in Thailand regarding our historical locations, architectures and many more. The owner does put a lot of thought into building this place.

They also created an environment that takes you back to the traditional Thai lifestyle. It’s a quick way to learn more about Thai culture in one trip. We had lunch at the shop that sits by the canal. One of my favorite dish – Boat noodle (Kuay-Taew-Ruer).

There are several other places that we didn’t have time to visit this trip. Plus I don’t want to temple out my husband by visiting all the temples in one trip. I think to really enjoy and appreciate what we have to offer, we need to take our time and not just rush through the place just to get it done. That being said, it’s easier said than done when you had 2 young children with you that kicking and screaming for the A/C. :)
