Hi Amy – Thanks so much for the mention in your blog post! These are some great tips for traveling parents. I didn’t bring my kids on this trip but have tagged along with the kiddos on my husband’s business trips before & think it’s a wonderful way to save some cash & squeeze in more family travel!

Great advice, Amy! I haven’t taken my family on a business trip yet, but maybe someday. I have to confess that I look forward to my little weekends once or twice a year away from home to recharge, do some thinking and writing, and then come back to the chaos a bit more refreshed! But I thought Kidcon at Type-A Mom was a brilliant idea for those who choose to bring their kids or families along!

@Momisodes: Yes, Sandy. It’s definitely something you might want to consider. One thing I forgot to mention was that the location of the conference is a big plus for us since it’s within driving distance. So the transportation cost is the same whether it’s just me or the whole family. It’s something you might be able to leverage as well for next year in NYC. :)

I’ve done a few business/family trips, starting way back when my Dad used to take all of us with him to California and other locations.

As an adult now, I’ve found it’s important to let my daughter know what the schedule is, as much as I can. As you mentioned, with a conference it’s a bit easier to let kids that understand time know what’s what. But when I do IT consulting work for small companies, I know there is no way I can predict how the day will go and let her know that too. When expectations are set accordingly, I’ve found it helps both the kids and the parents enjoy what they have, which in the end is more family time together than if one parent went on the trip alone.
